Experience

I love teaching, in particular literature and writing, and am a passionate reader and writer myself. My decision to study Classics at Colby was therefore an easy one. So too has been my decision to pursue teaching, that started to fully develop while participating in a summer Classics course at Harvard University on the subject after my sophomore year. Several of the graduate-level students in that course told me at the end of the term that my participation had enriched their experience and they encouraged me to aspire not only to graduate studies but to a career in teaching and writing. During my junior year, I was selected by my academic advisor, Prof. Kerill O’Neill, to be a tutor to students enrolled in his largest class, Heroes of the World. Kerill also asked me to lead regular review sessions before mid-terms and final exams – he later told me that this was the first time that he had ever designated a tutor to do so. By the end of the semester, more than half the class was attending my review sessions, and I remain a tutor for Kerill’s myth classes and have received outstanding feedback and am told that I am very popular as a tutor among the students. My interest in teaching and learning also led me to enroll in a Cognitive Psychology class, in which I learnt the basics of the process by which people learn and develop intellectually. While only a neophyte, I have nonetheless applied what I learnt in that class in my role as tutor for Kerill. For several years I have also been a member of Colby’s Learning Differences Task Force. The aim of the Task Force is to establish a Center for Teaching and Learning at Colby. The ability to properly and effectively communicate through writing is very important because my younger brother has struggled with it since childhood. Needless to say, I would be delighted and privileged to work at a company that prides itself on the improvement and appreciation of these abilities. Further, I think it would be a lot of fun to help others find themselves through their writing. Lastly, I am a strong ACT test taker and received a composite score of 29 with a score of 29 in English and 33 in Reading. I would be more than willing to help others with the ACT both as a supporting hand through the stressful process and a helpful tutor.

Hobbies

What my experience and qualifications section does not contain is any mention of my personal interests or pursuits. I address that here. Anyone who knows me will say that I have been an avid, a passionate, reader since I was very young. I absolutely cherish the moment when I dive into a book and find myself in a world not my own. I treasure equally the moment when I return to “my” world to find that I understand and appreciate my world all the more for having read. I only hope that I can foster that same love of literature and learning in the students I tutor.
